Doesn't matter how green the energy is for PoW mining, it's still 'wasted' energy. Turning a bunch electricity into heat just to win a lottery is not a useful way to spend that energy. All that energy could be going to real work instead. PoW was a great idea in 2008 but since then we've invented better systems. PoW is now outdated and should be replaced. PoW is the steam engine of cryptocurrency.
Proof of waste is neither egalitarian nor is it our future.
That's still a lot of power usage for something that generates nothing physically useful to humans.

Freaking global warming. People think this because they are told, by the guy who sells carbon credits and makes millions mind you, that there is global warming. I am old enough to remember the research and how they did their testing and metering and it is a joke if you know the real facts behind. And no one has been able to tell me how the temps on Venus and Mars has been going up as well IF it is man made.. people love to believe the bad and negative regardless of research. And the governments love to say "here is a/the problem, and I/we are not solution. Vote for me and give me millions."

Who gives a shit? The problem has never been the energy USED, it's where the energy COMES FROM.

Great video!. One point though, I dont really believe that increased mining efficiency in the future will reduce energy usage. Instead I think this will incentivise mining companies to just buy new mining gear to increase their hashpower. Probably leaving some of the older gear no longer profitable, becoming e-waste.

One issue that I never see mentioned by either side. Total hashrate has a direct relationship to coin value (due to block rewards for the meaningful future, and excluding halvings and inertial effects for brevity) therefore, very roughly, if value per coin goes up 10x, energy consumption also goes up 10x. I'm delighted by this report. But I'm waiting for the independent analyses once the models and data are open-sourced.
I always wonder why the same scrutiny isn't applied to other compute heavy enterprises, such as streaming, social networks, online retailers, and SaaS providers, who use orders of magnitude more equipment.
